Pierced Necklace with Opal and Diamond with added Wing Pin Element

$14,000.00

Years in the making, this passion project began with the Wing Pin—a hollow-formed sterling silver brooch encrusted with spinels and tanzanite, set in yellow and rose gold, and finished with intricate ajouré patterning.

An Australian boulder opal had been waiting in my collection—sourced during my 2022 Tucson Gem Show trip from Broken River Mining Co. Its color, alive and ever-shifting, evoked islands and open water—a sense of beauty and freedom—and I knew it needed to become part of the story.

What followed was a long period of exploration—prototypes, reworked connections, and a design that slowly revealed itself. Hollow-formed feather links echo the ajouré language of the wing, while gold accents and diamonds bring light into the darkened silver structure. The result is fully articulated, sculptural, and seamlessly convertible.

The wing remains removable—worn alone as a brooch, or integrated as the focal point of the necklace, transforming the entire composition. This duality—of object and adornment, of structure and movement—is at the heart of the work.

Design

This necklace is handcrafted from oxidized sterling silver, 14k rose gold, and 18k yellow gold.

The ajouré metalwork begins as hollow domed sterling silver forms, allowing larger sculptural elements to remain lightweight. Gold components are soldered onto the silver forms to enhance contrast and warmth.

The gemstones are bezel set in a custom, handmade bezels created specifically for the stone. Signature hand-cut notches are placed asymmetrically into the bezel as a distinctive design detail. The stone is fully surrounded by metal, creating a secure and stable setting.
